Today is Juneteenth. It’s a day of celebration, honoring and remembering the long-awaited moment of emancipation for enslaved Texans. But it’s bittersweet. While it’s been over 150 years since slaves were freed in the United States, systemic racism still runs deep. It’s no secret that the current protests shed light on our country’s unfinished work. True justice and liberation for Black America remains.

Now more than ever, it’s time to support, uplift, and celebrate Black-owned businesses. It’s an opportunity to collectively put our dollars into BIPOC communities — a crucial part of amplifying melanated entrepreneurs. And while I realize becoming anti-racist takes dedicated time and consistent perseverance, buying from Black-owned companies is a great place to start. Together, we can end small business oppression. Together, we can close the racial wealth gap. Together, we can strengthen local communities. Together, we can help foster job creation. Together, we can encourage economic vitality.
Black lives matter
Below is a short, curated list of 12 Black companies — home goods, beauty, art, and jewelry — creating beautiful, quality products. However, there are also many free and economical options to support Black Lives Matter. Last year, I came across the Fifteen Percent Pledge, which calls on major retailers to commit a minimum of 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses. Signing the petition takes less than 30 seconds. For teachers and educators, see resources here, here, and here. And for low-cost options to show your support, see here. Last but not least, this free daily newsletter is chock-full of educational, inspiring information.
